Senior Transmission Engineer

Perform a substantive role in the substation design, preparation of specifications or field engineering related to assigned engineering projects under the supervision of the incumbent’s immediate supervisor or other designated professional engineer.

Essential Functions of Position:

1. Shall have a thorough knowledge of the practices and procedures pertaining to technical matters in the following areas:

  • PLS CADD, PLS Pole, PLS Tower etc.

  • MFAD, L-Pile

  • 5+ years of experience with transmission line design engineering

  • Design experience with distribution underbuilt facilities and/or other third-party attachments

  • Foundation design experience

  • Experience with industry design codes and standards for electric utility design

2. Shall perform with a minimum of supervision, a variety of leadership and detail design related duties including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Project scope, budgetary estimates and detail design for transmission projects ranging from 69kV to 500kV with and without distribution underbuild

  • Mentor design team in project design, answer detail design questions, resource development and engineering analysis

  • Assist with checking completed projects for design, calculations and documentation accuracy

  • Site new transmission lines, determine the impacts to real estate acquisition, environmental constraints associated with project location, surrounding habitats, permitting and be able to coordinate and assess these impacts in the overall engineering design process

  • Develop a complete design package that incorporates all necessary details for construction, such as plan and profile drawings, bill of materials, construction staking table, stringing sag charts, drawing standards, permit documents, quality assessment forms and project closeout documents

  • Engineering calculations in compliance with safety, customer standards, and industry utility practice.

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration with team, customer and Stakeholder Management

  • Prepare manual or computer assisted design and construction drawings of a complex nature with neatness and accuracy

  • Perform design services requiring a full understanding of drawings, specifications, and industry and Company standards covering the assigned work

  • Perform and complete detail design and all engineering calculations and deliverables to meet project schedules and budget milestones

  • Acquire on-site field data to accomplish the design

  • Design experience with civil foundations, steel detailing, and anchor bolt cages for concrete and wood structures as applicable

  • Solid understanding of design practices and engineering systems utilized in the power industry

  • Demonstrated knowledge of desktop computers and Microsoft Office products

  • Demonstrated knowledge with web-based design collaboration sites and drawing management systems

  • Ability to work independently and effectively interface with a multi-discipline engineering team, key stakeholders and customers both remotely and at various office locations

  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Prior experience following quality assurance processes while working in a project schedule-driven environment

  • Resource forecasting for proposed projects and new opportunities

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical or Civil Engineering, or other applicable field

  2. Professional Engineering licensure (strongly preferred) or EIT, with ability to be certified as a professional engineer as soon as eligible

  3. At least 5 years of experience using PLS-CADD, Pole, etc.

  4. Experience using MFAD, L-Pile, etc

  5. Knowledge in ASCE Pole Manual, AISC Steel manual preferred but not required

  6. Proficient with industry codes, standards and practices for electric utility practice

  7. Ability to apply client specifications and preferences to all designs
