Port of Palm Beach – Maritime Operations Center Standby Power System Upgrade
Client: Port of Palm Beach
Location: Riviera Beach, FL
Scope: Emergency Power Integration | Electrical Engineering Design
As part of its ongoing infrastructure resilience initiatives, the Port of Palm Beach Engineering Department engaged ECF Engineering Consultants to provide comprehensive electrical engineering design services for the integration of standby power to the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Maritime Operations Center (MOC). This mission-critical facility houses port operations and tenant spaces that require uninterrupted power for safety, communications, and essential services.
🔌 Project Highlights
New Standby Power Infrastructure Design:
ECF developed a robust electrical design centered around the port’s existing Type 1 emergency generator, incorporating a new 400A output breaker to serve the upgraded emergency system.
Code-Compliant Power Distribution:
To ensure full separation of critical loads by NFPA 110 and NEC 700 standards, dedicated 200A automatic transfer switches (ATS) were installed on each floor. These devices isolate essential circuits while maintaining seamless transition during utility outages.
Power Interception and Rerouting:
Existing tenant service feeds were intercepted and rerouted through the new ATS systems, allowing continued compliance while ensuring flexibility for current and future power demands.
HVAC Resiliency via Portable Generator Connection:
To support chilled water operations during outages, ECF designed and sized a manual transfer switch (MTS) and generator camlock connection at the chiller building. The existing feeder serving Chiller #1 was also redirected through the MTS for enhanced flexibility during extreme weather events or extended outages.
