When a hurricane makes landfall, the most visible signs of destruction are impossible to ignore. Fallen trees, damaged homes, flooded streets, and downed power lines dominate news coverage and social media. As soon as the storm passes, restoration crews begin arriving, and communities anxiously wait for the lights to come back on.


What most people don't see is everything that happens behind the scenes. Restoring power after a hurricane is far more than repairing broken equipment. It is a coordinated effort involving engineering, planning, logistics, and field operations that begins well before the storm arrives and continues long after the skies have cleared.

Utilities often begin preparing several days before a hurricane makes landfall.



Long before the first rain bands appear, utilities begin tracking the storm's projected path, monitoring forecast updates, and developing restoration plans. Engineers evaluate areas that may be most vulnerable, project managers coordinate resources, and crews begin staging equipment where it can be deployed safely once conditions allow.


Because hurricane forecasts can change quickly, these plans must remain flexible. A shift in the forecast cone may require crews, materials, and equipment to be repositioned with very little notice. Every decision made before landfall helps reduce delays once restoration efforts begin.


Behind every truck you see after a storm is days of preparation that most people never witness.

Approximately 80% of storm-related power outages are caused by damage to the electric distribution system, including poles, power lines, transformers, and vegetation.


The distribution system is responsible for delivering electricity directly to homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals. Because it stretches across neighborhoods and roadways, it is especially vulnerable to hurricane-force winds, falling trees, and flying debris.

When damage occurs, utilities cannot simply repair the first outage they encounter.


Engineers and field personnel conduct detailed damage assessments to identify the safest and most effective restoration strategy. Priority is given to repairs that restore service to the greatest number of customers while ensuring critical facilities such as hospitals, emergency services, and public infrastructure receive attention as quickly as possible.


Technology also plays an important role throughout this process. GIS mapping, digital field reporting, and engineering documentation provide utilities with real-time information that improves communication, reduces duplicate work, and helps restoration crews respond more efficiently.

Even after the storm has passed, the work doesn't stop. Engineers, inspectors, project managers, contractors, and utility crews often work in rotating shifts to keep restoration efforts moving forward as safely and efficiently as possible.


Every damaged circuit must be inspected before electricity can be restored. Re-energizing equipment too early can create serious safety hazards for both crews and the public. What may appear to be a simple repair often requires engineering evaluations, equipment inspections, documentation, and coordination across multiple teams before power can safely flow again.
